We are only having a Cocktail Reception – Should we add the extra expense for a band or entertainment?

Hosting a Cocktail Reception is normally shorter in duration than a traditional seated reception so there’s usually only about 1 and half hours or so for ‘dancing and mingling.’ So is it worth hiring a band or should you save on costs and just go with background music?

Think of ‘the band’ as not just for ‘dancing’ but a way of setting the tone and pace for the whole reception. Cocktail Receptions while shorter in duration on most occasions still require a mood and your choice of entertainment will certainly assist in creating the perfect mood for your big day. With a Cocktail Reception consider a 3 piece combo or a pianist. They will or should be at the reception to welcome your guests and then the arrival of the newlyweds. The tempo can be changed up or down depending on the flow of your reception.

If you require a ‘first dance’ then this is the segue to the hour of dancing (as mentioned above), the cake cutting and then the farewell of the happy couple.

Just remember that all these aspects must be discussed and agreed in contract with your venue and supplier of choice to avoid confusion and disappointment.

Consider engaging with a Wedding Day Coordinator who will coordinate the venue and suppliers as well as develop, supply, brief and implement the pre reception and reception timetable for you so you can enjoy your special day.

Have a wonderful day – your way!
